The best CCTV systems result from correct selection of individual components. There is a huge selection of CCTV cameras on the market and so correct choice can be difficult. Everyone claims their cameras are the best quality but in reality most will not be suitable for your particular application. The most common mistake we see people make when choosing a CCTV camera is to select one with too wide angle a lens. Whilst this gives good coverage in terms of area it means detail captured will only be limited. You have to make a choice between the angle of view and how much detail you want to be able to retrieve.
The other big failing we see with regards CCTV cameras is their low light and night time performance. The "range" of the IR or infra red lights fitted to the camera we tell you very little. Unfortunately there are no industry standard measuring methods and so on company's 10m IR could be more powerful than another's 30m IR. What is actually more important is the sensitivity of the electronics fitted to the cameras. There are hundreds or thousands or different combinations of CCD and DSP chipset out there. Correct choice is paramount if good night time CCTV images are to be captured.
Finally when considering night time range don't forget the lens fitted to the camera. We see so many cameras with a wider angle lens advertised as having long range night time capability when in reality that wide angle lens will render footage captured some distance from the CCTV camera useless through lack of detail.
